The president and provost of Stanford University who clamped down on student protests during the Vietnam War era has died.
The university announced that Richard W. Lyman died of congestive heart failure in Palo Alto Sunday. He was 88.
Lyman, a history professor, served as provost before becoming Stanford's 7th president from 1970 to 1980. He opposed the Vietnam War, but had little tolerance for anti-war protests on campus.
He urged riot police to come to campus in 1969 after students broke into the main administration building and vandalized it. He also prohibited students from occupying a building overnight.
During his tenure, Lyman launched a $300 million fundraising campaign for Stanford, then the largest kind in higher education.
He's survived by a wife, two daughters and two sons.

A 9-year-old boy and his 52-year-old father were seriously injured Sunday morning when the motorcycle they were riding crashed with a car in Antioch this morning, according to Antioch police.
The crash was reported at 10:56 a.m. at the intersection of Deer Valley Road and Balfour Road, police said.
A 40-year-old Brentwood woman was turning south onto Deer Valley Road from Balfour Road when she collided with the father and son, both from Clayton, who were riding north on Deer Valley Road on a motorcycle, according to police.
The woman driver was not injured in the crash, but the boy and his father were airlifted to hospitals with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, police said.
